Clean C drive using Disk Cleanup


Local Disk C as we know is the most important drive on your PC, as all the apps and the system data by default goes to the C drive, due to which most of the useless and space consuming data gets accumulated in the C drive. It consists of the temporary internet files, temporary Windows file, downloaded program files, the useless files in the Recycle Bin, some unused applications and various unused Windows component and the list goes on and on.

There may be various factors which may be eating up your free space on Local Disk C. But the most significant of them is the Windows.old file. This file is the residual file in Windows 10 and some previous versions when we update to a higher version. The Windows.old file remain in our system in case we want to revert back to the previous version of the Windows. But, if we are satisfied with the current version, the Windows.old file is nothing but a space hogger.

So, today we are going to tell you, how you can delete some useless files on your C drive using a simple built in tool known as Disk Cleanup.



How to clean C drive using Disk Cleanup tool

Following are the steps on how you can use Disk Cleanup utility to free up good amount of space on your C drive.

  1. Click on the Start button on the bottom left corner of the windows screen and search for Disk Cleanup by simply typing on the keyboard.
  2. When you click the Disk Cleanup tool, a window like this will appear. Select the C drive and click OK.
  3. After clicking the Ok button. The Disk Cleanup utility will start and begin searching for the things eating up your space on C drive.
  4. When the tool finished scanning all of the things. It will show up a box where you can see the files taking space on your C drive. Now, you can choose which files to choose and delete. If you just updated to a new version of Windows you need to click on the Clean up system files button at the bottom left of the window. Here, you can delete the Windows.old file.
  5. When you click on Clean up system files button, the tool will start the scanning process again, so no need to worry.Select the files you want to delete from your C drive and click on the OK button. A window will appear asking if you want to permanently delete the files from the system.Just click on Delete Files button and the job is done.
  6. It will take a minute to complete the cleaning process and you can see the change in the space occupied by your C drive now.
